NJ Nonprofits Experiencing Severe Negative Effects of Coronavirus

first_imgHowever, due to the pandemic Brookdale is shifting its focus to a more pressing need: the welfare of its students. Instead of staging an in-person event, they will pivot to a virtual or online campaign designed to raise money to help students who have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal is to help stabilize students in this time of crisis, Zeiss said. LYNNE WARDThis time of year is usually one of People Pages photographer Lynne Ward’s busiest times as she scrambles from gala to fundraiser covering the many charities, nonprofits and foundations in the Two River area. But the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancelation of all large gatherings and forced everyone to stay at home. This article originally appeared in the April 9th, 2020 print edition of The Two River Times. Mental health organizations have always been extremely important in Monmouth County and beyond and now the need for mental health access is more important than it has ever been. According to CEO Wendy DePedro, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County is coordinating with local and state officials to meet the growing needs of the community with the public’s health and safety as their top priorities. The agency has transitioned its on-site staff to remote status, underscoring the importance of social distancing and reducing possible exposure to the virus. Fulfill, formerly The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, postponed its “Shine Light On Hunger” Humanitarian Gala, originally scheduled for March 27, to June 4. Fulfill will continue to monitor the situation and decide as the date gets closer, to either postpone again or cancel. So don’t get rid of those dancing shoesjust yet. They’ll be back in style soonenough. In these days of social distancing and the governor’s order prohibiting group gatherings, charities and nonprofit organizations have been forced to cancel their events for the spring philanthropy season. Some organizations have rescheduled for summer or fall dates, while others have canceled completely until next year. The MHA Annual Dinner and 70th Anniversary planned for May 13 will be rescheduled for later in the year. The annual dinner is one of the most important fundraisers of the year for the agency. “Because of the coronavirus crisis, Fulfill is providing all of our pantries and agencies – including Lunch Break, Parker Clinic and Red Bank’s Salvation Army – free Crisis Relief Boxes, sorted, bagged or boxed and, when needed, distributed, including no-cost transportation to their facilities, for them to give out to our neighbors in need. This has caused Fulfill’s costs to skyrocket. We are spending approximately $200,000 per week and we expect that number to keep climbing. Of course that means Fulfill’s gala will be more important than ever to us this year,” said Fulfill CEO and president Kim Guadagno, the former lieutenant governor of New Jersey. Fulfill is also experiencing a critical need for volunteers to pack the Crisis Relief Boxes with the spike in demand. Anyone who is healthy and can volunteer should email [email protected] Monetary donations are also needed. Fulfill’s Adopt-A-Family program allows donors to help a local family get through the coronavirus crisis. A $30 donation funds a four-day Crisis Relief Box for a family of four. All donations can be made at fulfillnj.org. “Our students continue to report that they are facing many challenges ranging from lost income, food insecurity and others so we will focus on efforts on raising money to provide direct financial support to them. We have already received a $50,000 donation and we will leverage that generous contribution to ‘challenge’ others to rise to the occasion,” said Zeiss. According to Tim Zeiss, executive director of the Brookdale Foundation and Alumni Affairs, Brookdale Community College has decided to cancel the Brookdale Scholarship Ball slated for June 5 and said that the health, safety and well-being of guests, organizers and staff is the first priority. The scholarship ball is the school’s largest annual event and has always been successful thanks to the support of sponsors, auction donors, attendees and honorees. “We are in the process of reaching out to a wide network of community agency providers as well as individual mental health practitioners to assure there are enough supports in place to help individuals and their families through this current crisis and in the days to come,” said DePedro. There will be an end to this crisis and the charities, foundations and organizations we support will need our help again. In my 16 years of covering Two River People events, spring is one of the busiest seasons for fundraisers. But with the COVID-19 pandemic, every sector of society has been impacted and New Jersey’s nonprofit community has been hit particularly hard. Many students have lost their jobs andare struggling to adapt to the new methodof taking classes online. Some studentsdo not own or have access to a laptop orWi-Fi. The college has responded to thisneed by making 400 laptops available asloaners. The Brookdale Foundation isproviding funding so those students haveaccess to Wi-Fi so they can continue theirclasses. By Lynne Ward Screening tools, specific guidelines and additional resources are available at mentalhealthmonmouth.org or mhanational.org. “Many of the nurses, health care workers, EMTs, police and others who are in the front lines battling this pandemic are Brookdale alumni,” he said. “So, while the campaign is designed to help students, we hope that people will consider donating in honor of those Brookdale graduates who are helping to make a difference.” last_img read more

Field Talk: A Q&A with Providers Supporting Military Families

first_imgField Talk is a monthly blog post sharing the voices of early childhood providers who serve or have served military families of young children with disabilities (birth to 5 years old).  We hope you find it to be educational, personable, and encouraging. This month we welcome Ellen Argo, PT.  Ellen works at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, TN .  This interview was edited for length and clarity.Describe your current role.I am a Physical Therapist, and currently work as an Assistant Manager in the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Fifty percent of my job duties are administrative and 50% are in patient care, mainly in the Acute Care and NICU setting. What’s your favorite part of your current job?Interacting with patients and their families is by far my favorite part of my job.Tell us about experiences you have had working with military families.Although my current position is in an acute care setting, I have worked with military families in the outpatient setting as well. During the past 15 years, I worked with military families who have had children in the NICU, children who have had acute illnesses or injuries and are in the hospital, and children who need outpatient physical therapy due to congenital, chronic, or acute conditions or injuries. I have worked with children from birth to 21 years of age.How did you find yourself working with military families?I moved to Clarksville, TN, a “military town” due to its proximity to Ft. Campbell, and began working in a pediatric outpatient clinic in 2002. I transitioned to a job at Vanderbilt in 2003 and because of its nature as a major children’s hospital, I continued to work with military families and their children there. Since then I have worked in another outpatient pediatric setting in Clarksville, TN, and continued at Vanderbilt as well.Describe a rewarding experience working with military families. There are SO many that it’s hard to choose only one! I once worked in the NICU with a family whose baby was born prematurely and had several significant health issues. The father was deployed but when the baby was born and the health issues were apparent, the father was allowed to come home for a period of time. On the day before he was supposed to return overseas, he and the mother were visiting the baby in the hospital and they arrived as I was beginning the baby’s PT session for the day. I had the honor of getting to teach the father how to perform infant massage on his tiny daughter—and it was the first time he was able to hold her.Describe a challenging experience working with military families.Early in my career working with military families I found it challenging when I needed to help a family order equipment or orthotics. Negotiating the Tricare system was a little different than working with commercial insurance. From your experience, how are military families similar and different from other types of families? How do you change your practice between families? All families want the best for their children and will go to any length to get it. It seems to me that military families rely more on friends and other non-family relationships for assistance with “life.” With deployments and trainings, frequently families often have only one parent or neither parent present and able to participate in therapy sessions. The internet and other technological advances have made it possible for the parent who is not present physically to participate in other ways such as videos of activities for caregivers to do at home with a child or “Skyping” to discuss a child’s progress. As providers, how can we support military parents who are deployed or away frequently due to trainings/school? It is important to remember that as providers it is not our job to tell families what to do, but rather, to help educate families so that they can make the best decisions for their children and families. The work of PT does not happen in the clinic or during the PT session-it happens at home, when the family is playing with, caring for, or otherwise interacting with their child. As providers it is imperative that we avoid judging families who are not able to follow through with our recommendations and work with the families to identify barriers and create recommendations that work within the family structure.Describe a specific stressor that military families with whom you have worked have shared or experienced. One stressor of deployments is the knowledge that the family members at home may or may not have regarding the deployed family member’s safety and when contact is infrequent and/or limited. I remember one occasion when a pre-teen patient arrived at the clinic for physical therapy with her mom, who was visibly distressed. As we began the session, the mother discreetly explained to me that earlier in the day she had received a call from the father, who was deployed. She explained that he had been with his unit earlier in the day when it was attacked. There had been one fatality and several injuries, although the father was not physically injured. The father had called to alert the family that he was ok, but he couldn’t talk on the phone for long or give more information. The mother chose to bring her child to PT to maintain a sense of “normalcy” for her and the child, but the stress of the situation clearly had an impact on the child’s performance that day. What “insider” tips or advice do you have for service providers working with military families who have young children with disabilities?Become educated about the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) and develop rapport with someone at the EFMP program. That was invaluable for me.If you could change or improve one thing for military families with young children with disabilities, what would it be?At Vanderbilt I work with numerous providers, many who do not understand the challenges faced by military families. I would love if non-military providers had more information so they could understand the challenges and rewards of military life. The MFLN blog is a great opportunity! What types of resources have you sought out to feel more confident and competent at meeting the specific needs of military families? (e.g., trainings, blog posts, organizations, etc.)I have worked to develop rapport with people who are on staff with Educational and Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS) and EFMP.This post was written by Robyn DiPietro-Wells & Michaelene Ostrosky, PhD, members of the MFLN FD Early Intervention team, which aims to support the development of professionals working with military families. Kinder Morgan CEO appreciates feds offer to backstop higher pipeline cost

first_imgLast month, the company said it would stop all non-essential spending on the expansion project to triple the amount of oil flowing from Alberta to the West Coast, which Alberta says is critical to reducing discounts on its product due mainly to pipeline bottlenecks.Kean reiterated that construction won’t be restarted unless there are sufficient assurances by the end of this month that it can proceed.Outside the meeting in downtown Calgary, about 50 vocal pipeline supporters armed with signs and slogans assembled on the sidewalk, chanting as passing cars honked their horns.Picketers Mike Owens and Derek B. New reports to help forecast housing needs in BC

first_imgVICTORIA, B.C. – Local governments and the Province will use new housing needs reports to better understand and respond to long-term housing needs specific to their communities. To support this work the Province is providing $5 million over the next three years through a program administered by the Union of B.C. Municipalities, along with data and guidance to support communities’ efforts. This new legislation is requiring local governments to collect data, analyze trends and present a report every five years that describes current and anticipated housing needs.“The District of Chetwynd is pleased to have support from the Province to work on a housing needs study,” said Allen Courtoreille, mayor of Chetwynd. “As a resource community, Chetwynd faces unique housing challenges due to shifting demographics, and this is an important first step to help make sure that our young people, families and seniors have the homes they need.” According to the Province, the reports will assess key housing needs, including the need for affordable housing, rental housing and homes for seniors, people with special needs, families and people at risk of homelessness. Most of the data required by local governments, such as demographics and household income levels, will be available on a single provincial website at no cost.“Empowering communities to develop housing solutions that work for them is a key part of our government’s affordable housing strategy,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Housing needs reports will provide the information that local governments, along with the Province, need to make sure that we are all creating the right kind of homes for people living in communities throughout B.C.”The new requirements were developed in consultation with an advisory group, including representatives from the Union of B.C. Municipalities, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, BC Stats, BC Housing, the Planning Institute of BC, the BC Non-Profit Housing Association and local governments.“Effective housing policy needs a high level of collaboration and co-operation between the various levels of governments,” said Arjun Singh, president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM). “Local governments around the province have been undertaking their own housing need studies. The new provincial requirement will increase the data available and improve its consistency among communities. UBCM is pleased to administer funding for this initiative.”Once complete, all reports will be presented to a local government council or board. The reports will also be publicly available online to anyone seeking to better understand local housing needs. The intake for the first round of funding is now open and successful local governments will be notified in summer 2019.last_img read more

City aim to fight off fatigue as title race heats up

first_imgManchester (United Kingdom): Manchester City hope Saturday’s meeting with Watford can offer them the same sort of impetus their opponents provided for Premier League title rivals Liverpool. City manager Pep Guardiola has seen his side hit a downturn in their attacking form in recent weeks despite overtaking Liverpool and returning to the top of the table. The last three City games have seen them score just two goals, including a goalless League Cup final appearance against a Chelsea team they had defeated 6-0 just two weeks prior. Also Read – Dhoni, Paes spotted playing football together The run hardly represents a major concern, with City having won the cup final on penalties and their next two league games by 1-0 scorelines. But as a general indicator of form, City’s previously prolific goalscoring feats – which had produced 50 goals in the opening 13 games of 2019 – have dried up alarmingly. Watford, who were beaten 5-0 by a Liverpool team that had gone through a similarly barren spell immediately prior to their meeting, might be just the right opponents for City this weekend as they aim to maintain their one-point lead over Liverpool. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian Open Yet Guardiola must also have been alarmed by a growing injury list which includes Kevin De Bruyne after last weekend’s victory at Bournemouth. The Belgian midfielder suffered a hamstring injury early in the second half and City were economical with the facts surrounding the problem immediately after the game, other than Guardiola confirming he will be sidelined for a period of time. De Bruyne’s absence will add to the mounting frustrations for the 27-year-old, who started 36 of City’s 38 league games last season. De Bruyne will have played in just seven of City’s 30 league games this term if, as expected, he misses out against Watford. Two knee injuries have taken their toll on De Bruyne this season although, even when he has enjoyed extended periods in the first team, he has appeared short of the form that made him one of the league’s most effective players last season. De Bruyne’s lack of cutting edge was hardly a problem for City over the opening weeks of the new year, but his side have found it more difficult to wear teams down in recent games. The fact the Belgian played so much over the summer, with his team reaching the latter stages of the World Cup, has been cited by both player and manager as a reason for his lack of fitness and form. And City’s gruelling schedule, as they continue to compete for four trophies, has clearly impacted upon, not only De Bruyne but a number of other players, with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte also suffering recent injuries. Speaking earlier this month, before his latest setback, De Bruyne conceded that those absences have affected him. “Sometimes I feel good, sometimes I feel a little bit worse or I need a day more to recover,” he said. “But I try every day to be at the best level I can be, and sometimes people have to give me a little bit of slack after the amount of time I’ve been away. “I always want to be better. But sometimes my body just says ‘no’ and I have to take that in my stride.”last_img read more
