Jeremiah Briscoe Wins Second Consecutive Payton Award

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Jeremiah Briscoe’s humility shined on a weekly basis this season. At every opportunity, the Sam Houston State quarterback credited his team’s wide receivers and offensive linemen for his success. Briscoe’s leadership and powerful right arm meant even more to the nationally ranked Bearkats. Briscoe, from Houston, helped lead Sam Houston State to a 12-2 record and a semifinal appearance in the FCS playoffs. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder leads the FCS in passing yards (5,003), passing yards per game (357.4), touchdown passes (45) and points responsible for (288). Said Sam Houston coach K.C. Keeler: “When your quarterback isn’t a diva and your quarterback doesn’t care about anything other than the Ws, it really makes your whole locker room in sync and worried about the same thing – about winning a ball game.” South Dakota senior quarterback Chris Streveler finished second and UC Davis junior wide receiver Keelan Doss was third in the voting. There were 25 finalists for the award named after the legendary College and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back. Briscoe claimed the 2017 STATS FCS Walter Payton Award as the national offensive player of the year Friday night at the national awards banquet in Frisco, Texas. He’s just the second two-time recipient of the 31-year-old award, joining Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards in 2008 and ’09. He threw for 9,605 yards and 102 touchdowns in his two Payton Award seasons. “I have some of the best players in the country around me,” he said. “And I think it just goes to show how well they make me look.” A national panel of 151 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries voted on the Walter Payton Award. Past winners include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, John Friesz, Brian Finneran, Jimmy Garoppolo and Cooper Kupp.Courtesy of STATS FCSlast_img read more

first_imgJOCKEY QUOTESKENT DESORMEAUX, MAXIM RATE, WINNER: “I watched the tape of her last race (Grade III Providencia Stakes on April 6) and you could see she was very unlucky to lose. Simon called me up before we ran and told me she was delightful, that she would do whatever I asked, he thought she would be best with a target, so I asked him who that was going to be. There was absolutely no pace but I was super-pleased to see Rafael, (Bejarano aboard Ladymidtown) lead with some aggression and set me up with a target. When Joe, (Talamo aboard Miss Flawless) came to her at the eighth pole she had to find two more gears. I think the pressure factor from the neighbors helped her progress. Just trying to win with the horses coming behind her on the backside, they pushed her; I had my hands full.”TRAINER QUOTESSIMON CALLAGHAN, MAXIM RATE, WINNER, AND HOSTESS, FOURTH (reached by phone in Kentucky, where yesterday he saddled favored Bellafina in the Kentucky Oaks): “I watched the race (Senorita) here and it was very exciting. I thought she’d be hard to beat after her last race (second by a nose in the Grade III Providencia at 1 1/8 miles when she bobbled at the start). She got the trip we expected today and cutting back to a mile wasn’t a concern.”OWNER QUOTESRYAN COSATO, MAXIM RATE, WINNER: “It was a tough one to take last time. She ran awfully good – too good to lose. But we figured we’d re-group and cut her back to a mile in distance. Unfortunately, Flavien didn’t ride her today because he’s out of town for the Derby, but it never hurts when you replace him with a Hall of Famer like Kent. Things worked out.“With it being a short field, the race looked to have a lack of speed, so that was nice because I think our filly can place herself in a close position. I thought she would sit in a nice stalking position, and the race unfolded that way. Fortunately she had enough left in the tank to hold off Lady Prancealot.”NOTES: The winning owner is Nick Cosato of Slam Dunk Racing.last_img read more

Alli stats show frightening decline of one-time Spurs and England golden boy

first_imgTHE Alli data has lost its bite.Dele Alli’s stats show why Spurs fans, pundits and now England manager Gareth Southgate have noted a sharp decline from golden boy to injury-hit top of the flops.8 Dele Alli has struggled with form and injuries over the past 18 months, as backed up by facts ‘n figures, especially with SpursCredit: Getty Images – Getty88Midfielder Alli was hauled off as Tottenham’s’ early-season woes peaked with Tuesday’s 7-2 home humiliation by Bayern Munich and then left out of Southgate’s squad for two Euro 2020 qualifiers next week. And the 23-year-old’s Tottenham figures since the start of last term highlight why social media has been blitzed with comments like: “Dele Alli is done” and “Can someone tell me the last time he had a good game”.Alli’s goalscoring has fallen steeply from a stunning 22 in 46 starts in 2016-17 and 14 from 42 the following term – with just seven in his 38 games since then, including only one this calendar year. His total of assists and overall chances created have also both halved since 2017-18.Assists dropped from an incredible 15 that term to eight last season – with none so far this campaign, albeit from just three starts and one game off the benchAnd the number of chances Alli conjured plummeted from 88 two seasons ago to 44 in 2018-19.But a glimmer of hope amid otherwise murky figures is that he has already created four this term.’STILL GETTING WORSE’And it must be pointed out that, despite reaching the Champions League final in June, Spurs as a whole are struggling too.In fact, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are level with Brighton on 16 for the highest number of Premier League defeats in 2019.Alli’s passing accuracy has stood up well to his problems, hovering around the 80 per cent mark throughout his Prem career. And although he has tried to dribble far less since the start of last season, his success rate has steadily risen over the past four terms.Alli’s England stats have actually improved in the past two years. albeit judged from few games.Indeed, it was his goal that clinched a 2-0 last-eight win over Sweden in the 2018 World Cup.And he won the free-kick brilliantly swerved home by Kieran Trippier in the Three Lions’ 2-1 semi-final loss to Croatia. But after missed three months of the last Prem campaign due to hamstring troubles, Alli has been under even more intense fire this term. One fan tweeted: “Dele Alli has declined so much since his 16/17 season, his performances somehow get worse every time I watch him.”888And when Pochettino omitted fit-again Alli for a 2-1 defeat at Leicester two weeks ago, many pundits argued it might be the shock he needed.Ex-England playmaker Joe Cole told BT Sport: “The resting shout is one for the media. He has not been the player we know he can be.”That’s just a little kick from Pochettino to inspire Dele to get back to his best form.”And Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand suggested in the same week: “I really think he has [got something to prove].”Ferdy then put forward his own theory as to why Alli has struggled. The former England defender said: “He was playing too deep I felt last year in the midfield, having to receive the ball with his back to goal etc.most read in footballTHROUGH ITRobbie Keane reveals Claudine’s father was ’50-50′ in coronavirus battleTOP SELLERGavin Whelan has gone from League of Ireland to David Beckham’s InstagramExclusiveRIYAD RAIDMan City’s Riyad Mahrez has three luxury watches stolen in £500,000 raidPicturedAN EYEFULMeet Playboy model and football agent Anamaria Prodan bidding to buy her own clubI SAW ROORodallega saw Rooney ‘drinking like madman’ & Gerrard ‘on bar dancing shirtless’NEXT STEPJonny Hayes set to move to English Championship having been let go by Celtic“I think he’s best when he’s running on to things, looking at the goal and taking his chances early.“I think he’s a fantastic player when he’s doing those right things.”But the stats show Alli has plenty of figuring out to do if he is to return to his best – at a time of Tottenham turmoil and England excitement over a new generation of playmakers itching to oust him permanently.8Watch Bayern Munich’s post-match celebration as shy ‘Grenade’ Gnabry receives standing ovation after hat-trick in 7-2 thrashing of Spurs8last_img read more

Parramatta Eels continue resurgence with 24-22 win over Wests Tigers

first_imgAfter losing their opening six games of the season, the Eels have recorded back- to-back wins to breathe life into their flailing campaign. However the victory was quickly soured by fears second-rower Tony Williams tore his ACL for the second time in a year.               “I don’t think it’s real good. He needs to have scan tomorrow, but I’ve been told that it’s ACL,” Eels coach Brad Arthur said after the match.              In a closely-fought contest in which the lead changed hands seven times, it was Eels second-rower Manu Ma’u who stood out as the unlikely hero with a try and try assist in the second half.          The Eels were down by four points with 11 minutes to go on Sunday when Ma’u powered over off a Corey Norman pass to claim the match-winning try in front of a crowd of 17,555.            The result means the resurgent Tigers have lost consecutive matches for the first time this season, and leaves them outside the top four for the first time in a month.            Parramatta remain in last spot but are level with Manly, Canterbury and North Queensland to move within two victories of the top eight.   After both teams traded penalty goals early, the Tigers broke the game open when Esan Marsters burst into the backfield and found a supporting Corey Thompson in the 25th minute. But the defensive lapse only spurred the Eels into gear, crossing twice in five minutes through Bevan French and Michael Jennings to steal the ascendancy.French soared over opposite winger David Nofoaluma to claim his first try of the season, before Jennings took a sublime Mitchell Moses offload on the other side of the field.Another Marsters penalty on the stroke of halftime reduced the Eels’ lead to two at the break, before a piece of Luke Brooks magic not long after the resumption gave them the lead.Possessing what Nine Network commentator Phil Gould described as the best no- look pass in the league, the Tigers’ halfback put Matt Eisenhuth between the posts untouched in the 45th minute.A late Ma’u offload allowed Brad Takairangi to steal back the advantage, which they held for just five minutes before Marshall seized back the initiative by backing up Mahe Fonua. However, the Eels claimed the lead for good on Mau’s rampaging run, and held on to back up their breakthrough win last week over Manly.last_img read more

Spain also sweeps Uruguay in the ATP Cup

first_imgEach Nadal and Bautista performed very solidly and gave no choices to their respective rivals. In the duel of numbers one, the Balearic was unattainable for Cuevas, 45th in the world rankings, and received 6-2 and 6-1 after an hour and 13 minutes of play.Nearly unapproachable together with his service, since in all the duel he granted a single ball of break which managed to save lots of, the chief of the ATP put 26 successful pictures for less than eight unforced errors, too profitable for his rival, who at instances was very pissed off on the Australian arduous monitor. In the last tremendous tie-break and after the 2-2 exit, Carreño and Feliciano reactivated to realize a 9-1 partial that settled the contest after an hour and three minutes. Imanol only has the Illarramendi casualty against Mirandés

first_imgFrom there, the only player who ended up bothering the game against Athletic was Mikel Oyarzabal, He received a very hard tackle from Iker Muniain. But the Eibarrés attacker was able to finish Sunday’s game and then has not had any sequels. It has a blow, but it will not be a problem to be ready for the Mirandes visit. In fact, he has trained normally, as expected. Imanol can also count on David Zurutuza, another player who had been touched for a while. Since last week he trains with the group and could enter the Cup list this week, or failing in the Gipuzkoan derby against Eibar de Ipurua. Two other players who dragged muscle problems are the central Le Normand and Aritz Elustondo, but both are in good condition and Imanol can also count on them in the big copera meeting on Thursday. Good news in Zubieta with the infirmary of the Royal Society. In the absence of a day for the great event of the season for the Txuri-Urdin, Imanol Alguacil only has the loss of his captain, Asier Illarramendi, who has already been injured for almost six months and that is in the final stretch to finally re-enter with the group. This means that the Real recovers the players who had reluctant in recent days. This is the case of Martin Ødegaard, whom Imanol Alguacil booked in the Basque derby against Athletic Bilbao last Sunday. The Norwegian is already at the same pace as his teammates, that break has been good for him, and the appointment against the Mirandes will not be missed. Another player who could not play the Reale Arena Basque football classic was the center Diego Llorente. The Madrid was injured against Mallorca and missed the last meetings. But He is already recovered, has completed the session normally and is available to the realistic coach.last_img read more
