You should be pleased. But you shouldn’t necessarily be satisfied. The numbers may be positive, but it doesn’t always mean you are where should be.A sales organization is an engine. Your job in leadership is to get the very highest performance from that engine. Positive numbers are good, and they’re important. But the real question is, “Are you getting the most from the engine? Is it performing to its potential?”Even though your numbers are positive, are they as positive as they should be based on how your industry is performing? Or are they more positive than your last year’s number and still under the industry?When you look at categories like divisions, segments, and markets, are they where they should be? Or is the positive number really being delivered by too few divisions, a single segment, or a couple of markets?Are each of your sales teams performing to their full potential? Or are some woefully behind while one or two outperform their peer groups?Is the result you’re obtaining, positive though it is, really the right result based on the investment you’re making?Each of the above questions point to potential. There are some cylinders that are firing, and some cylinders that aren’t (or, if they are firing, they’re not producing the power they should be).It’s important not to get too wrapped up in positive numbers. Celebrate. Be pleased. But don’t be satisfied. Your role in sales leadership isn’t just about a positive number; it’s about getting the maximum from the engine’s potential. It’s to tune things so that you can help the engine reach its full potential in each division, segment, market, product, sales team, and even the individual salesperson.
An evaluation report on India’s tiger reserves has put the spotlight on an alleged nexus between some officials of Kaziranga National Park and poachers.Kaziranga, a World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO, is more popular as the world’s best address for the one-horned rhino. It is also been a major tiger reserve covering an area of 1,080 sq km.Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier this week released the management effectiveness evaluation reports for tiger reserves across the country, including Kaziranga.The report says that some staff of Kaziranga Tiger Reserve may sometimes get involved in poaching by helping the poachers. To drive home the point, the report cites the poaching of three rhinos in as many days in November 2017 close to the Tunikati anti-poaching camp under the Burapahar Range.Anti-poaching camps “When there are 178 anti-poaching camps in a 911-sq-km area, each camp has to protect 5 sq km. Given the resources at the command of the personnel, it should not be difficult to guard the area effectively. Such poaching close to the camps leads to the suspicion of the involvement of officials,” it says.The report also notes Kaziranga’s management weakness in coordinating with forest officials of Karbi Anglong, which runs along the southern boundary of the tiger reserve. This is because the forest officials of Karbi Anglong, an autonomous tribal council, are not answerable to the heads of Assam’s Forest Department.The hills of Karbi Anglong not only provide shelter to the animals of Kaziranga during high floods but also cover for poachers, the report said.Railway lineAssam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya had informed the 126-member State Assembly that an expert committee had been formed to study the proposal for laying a second track through Deepor Beel, a wetland on the western edge of Guwahati that was listed in 2002 as a Ramsar Site.“The panel will submit its report to the National Green Tribunal, which will decide on whether or not to go ahead with the project,” Mr. Suklabaidya said.
PIB reveals that the UPA-led government suggested that Kalmadi be made the OC chief.As the debate rages as to who appointed Suresh Kalmadi as the chief of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Mail Today has accessed a document which shows that he was elevated to the post on January 30, 2005 by the Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by the late Arjun Singh.The document also reveals that the GoM accepted a suggestion made on December 6, 2004 by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to appoint Kalmadi as OC chief.In the Press Information Bureau (PIB) release – which Mail Today is in possession of – dated January 30, 2005, Singh had also announced a slew of committees, including the one where the OC was to be headed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Kalmadi.”The Organising Committee will deal with the Government of India through the ministry of youth affairs and sports and with the Delhi government,” the PIB release quoting Singh said.In that release, the apex committee headed by sports minister Sunil Dutt was given overriding power and responsibility to oversee and coordinate the Commonwealth Games. In fact, Dutt was a member of the GOM that appointed Kalmadi. While suggesting that Kalmadi be made the OC chairman, the PMO also wanted an empowered committee, under the minister of youth affairs and sports, to look after the construction of the stadia and other infrastructure facilities required for the Games.The PMO suggested that “this committee may be chaired by minister of youth affairs and sports and would comprise three vice-chairmen – Lt Governor, Delhi, chief minister, Delhi, and chairman of the OC”. It is clear that the GOM had envisioned the apex committee as the supreme body.”The minutes of all the other committees related to the conduct of the Commonwealth Games shall be submitted to the apex committee periodically for its information,” Singh had said.”The chairman of the apex committee can also call for such information which he deems fit and can give such guidance that may required.” Singh had also announced then that a threemember sub-committee, headed by the then finance minister P. Chidambaram, would supervise and deal with all the financial matters.Singh had also said the OC executive board would have 15 members, including the chairman and the vice-chairman, to be appointed in consultation with the GoM. effect, the GoM had put in place checks and balances over the OC.How many meetings of the apex committee under Dutt and subsequent sports ministers were held is, however, uncertain. But the fact remains that Kalmadi was appointed by the government and the OC was formed only a week or so after the January 30, 2005 announcement.advertisement
