Barton’s goal is to succeed for NSW

first_imgAchieving your goals is the philosophy Daniel Barton follows. The 24-year-old has had a rollercoaster 2012; he won the National Touch League (NTL) with the Sydney Scorpions in March, debut for the Australian men’s opens team in the Trans-Tasman series in Mudgee in April and tomorrow he will don the sky blue shirt of New South Wales for the first time.Barton will be one of many NSW players taking on Queensland in the 2012 State of Origin (SOO) series, which will be played in Port Macquarie tomorrow and Saturday. But Barton’s success in Touch Football can be attributed to hard work, dedication and his passion for the sport.“If you want to succeed in sport and want to do well, you have to set your goals,” Barton said.“It’s good to set your goals and achieve them.”The Parramatta Eel said he has been fortunate to grab the opportunities he has been given with both hands. However, he is not the first Barton to wear the NSW and Australian colours. In 1985, his father Paul played for Australia in the first Test series against New Zealand and also represented NSW for seven years.“Although he hasn’t said it, I’m sure he is proud of me. He came up and watched me in the Trans-Tasman series,” Daniel said.Being one of the seven debutantes in the 14-man NSW line-up, Daniel is jumping out of his skin to get on the paddock.“I’m really looking forward to it. It is a different environment.“Speaking to Steve [Roberts, NSW captain] and he said ‘this [SOO] is the hardest tournament. It’s more competitive than Trans-Tasman’.“Queensland have a good side and quite a few good players.”The men’s opens first match will tap-off at 7.30pm tomorrow. For more information on the State of Origin series, check out these websites:SOO – www.soo.mytouchfooty.comTouch Football Australia – www.austouch.com.auOr FOLLOW us on Twitter or LIKE us on our Facebook page.Related LinksState of Originlast_img read more

NHT Provides $43 Million in Home Grants for Perth Beneficiaries

first_imgThe National Housing Trust (NHT) has provided home grants totalling $43.2 million to help lower income contributors to purchase housing solutions in its newest scheme at Perth, Manchester.A total of 36 beneficiaries have received grants of $1.2 million to buy their lots. These funds were made available to persons earning no more than $10,000 weekly and who have been contributing to the NHT for at least 10 years without getting a benefit. The 592-acre Perth development, located just outside Mandeville, is the first major project undertaken by the NHT in Manchester. Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, on Wednesday, March 20, handed over service lots to the first 25 of 245 beneficiaries in Phase 1 of the development, following a bus tour of the project site.Managing Director of the NHT, Cecile Watson, said the income of the beneficiaries of the scheme range from near minimum wage to over $20,000 per week.“This is testament to how the NHT is pricing its housing solutions to bring them into the reach of its contributors at every income level,” Mrs. Watson stated. She explained that in keeping with a commitment to provide opportunities for young professionals, the Trust selected 40 persons, 25 to 40 years old, to benefit in the scheme. These include teachers, policemen, firemen and health professionals, who were selected on the basis of their contribution and whether they live or work in the parish.Additionally, 64 solutions were assigned by way of special benefit order to 41 low income contributors, subsidised at a cost of $27.88 million; one disabled applicant; 13 NHT staff. and nine public sector employees. The lots range in sizes from 7,500 sq ft. to a quarter of an acre, which is larger than most NHT scheme lots that are approximately 4,000 sq. ft. “At a conservative estimate of two NHT contributors per household, the 258 lots in Perth Phase 1 will benefit a minimum of 516 contributors and the lives of extended families will be transformed through the gift of home ownership in this scheme,” Mrs. Watson said.Meanwhile, National Security Minister and Member of Parliament, Central Manchester, Peter Bunting, welcomed the Perth beneficiaries to the constituency. He joined others in advocating that the new recipients incorporate in their building plans, adequate provisions for the conservation and storage of water.Since the NHT was established 37 years ago, it has constructed 285 housing schemes accounting for over 71,000 solutions, and financed thousands of other non scheme benefits, which have enabled contributors to buy land, build or purchase houses on the open market.By Andrea Braham, JIS Reporterlast_img read more

Mens Hockey Goaltending takes center stage early in Ohio States season

Ohio State then-freshman goaltender Tommy Nappier covers up a puck during Ohio State’s 4-0 win against Wisconsin on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018. Credit: Nick Hudak | For The LanternGoaltending can make or break a season. Teams with elite athletes between the pipes often find themselves competing for a championship at the end of the year.Ohio State is no exception.Redshirt senior goaltender Sean Romeo was one of the crutches that the Buckeyes relied on during their Frozen Four run last season. He allowed just over two goals per game and had a save percentage of .927, No. 3 in the Big Ten and No 9 in the country, starting 37 of the 41 games Ohio State played. This season, however, has been a different story for Romeo. He’s only started in half of the Buckeyes’ matchups and in his first three games, he allowed 11 goals, saving 81.2 percent of shots sent his way.Though Romeo has improved as of late, pitching three straight shutouts against Colgate, Notre Dame and Wisconsin, a program record, his struggles early in the season paved the way for sophomore Tommy Nappier to step into the spotlight for Ohio State. In the seven games Nappier has appeared in, including six starts, he has only allowed eight goals and holds the best save percentage in the nation at .958, along with two shutouts. While most teams generally put one guy in net for most of their season, associate head coach Steve Miller is familiar with having two dependable players in goal.“I go back to some of our great Denver teams. We were fortunate at times to have two really good guys who push each other, who challenge each other every day in practice,” Miller said. “You know you got to come and got to be sharp every day. You know there’s another guy there doing the same thing who’s playing at a high level, so I think it’s a real big positive for the guys.”Beyond the obvious benefits of having two dependable goaltenders, such as having a backup in case the starter goes down, it means less wear and tear on each goalie as the season progresses.“I feel more rested,” Romeo said. “You know, it’s a lot easier to play one game than two games.”A duo of rested goalies can pay dividends down the stretch for Ohio State come tournament time when other teams don’t have the same depth in net. Splitting starts has already led to a record-setting stretch for Ohio State between the pipes. The lone goal given up by Nappier against Wisconsin broke a three-game shutout streak. Ohio State has only given up three goals and has four shutouts in its past six games. The Buckeyes are also the only team in the nation that has multiple goaltenders with at least two shutouts, leading the NCAA with five shutouts..After Romeo started in almost every game for Ohio State last season, it would be understandable for him to be disappointed after getting his playing time cut in half. But he has taken his reduced playing time in stride and is nothing but supportive of his goaltending counterpart. “I enjoy going to the rink every day, seeing [Nappier],” Romeo said. “Obviously, we’re competing against each other, but there’s nothing bad. When he’s in I’m cheering for him, I think when I’m in he’s cheering for me, I hope so.” Nappier shared Romeo’s sentiments, saying that Romeo helps to make him better every day.Moving forward, there has been no indication from the coaching staff that these plans will change. Barring one goaltender’s play declining as the season goes on, it is expected that they will continue to split starts. Decisions may change, however, as Ohio State nears the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments in the spring. In high-stakes situations, they will have to decide whether to stick with both their hot hands or go with the veteran leadership that Romeo would bring to a squad trying to return to the Frozen Four. read more

Exercise counters brain shrinkage in Parkinsons disease

first_imgprotecting the brain from shrinkage, aerobic exercise may slow the progression of Parkinsons disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system, says a neurologist. In an editorial published online in the journal JAMA Neurology, neurologist J Eric Ahlskog from Mayo Clinic in Minnesota recommends that modern physical therapy practices should incorporate aerobic exercise training and encourage fitness for patients with Parkinson’s disease.Aerobic exercise means vigorous exercise, which makes you hot, sweaty and tired, Ahlskog explained. This could include activity such as walking briskly or using an elliptical machine. That does not mean stretching or balance exercises are not helpful, Ahlskog noted. Those types of exercises help with Parkinson’s symptoms, such as rigid muscles, slowed movement or impaired posture and balance. But to help fight the progression of Parkinson’s disease, including dementia — one of the most feared long-term outcomes of the disease, aerobic exercise enhances factors that potentially have a protective effect on the brain, Ahlskog noted. For instance, aerobic exercise liberates trophic factors —small proteins in the brain that behave like fertiliser does when applied to your lawn, he said citing scientific studies.Exercise helps maintain brain connections and counters brain shrinkage from Parkinson’s disease as well as from brain ageing, Ahlskog noted.last_img read more

Partythemed sandesh sweettalk voters in Bengal

first_imgKolkata: ‘Sandesh’ has been dressed up. It is on a catwalk either as the Trinamool’s ‘jora ghash phul’ (twin-flower), BJP’s Lotus, Congress’ Hand symbol, or the hammer and sickle of CPI (M). These “Election sweets” are just flying off the shelves at Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick — one of the oldest confectioners in the city or Shibani Sweets at Sodepur (the northern suburb). With the humble ‘nakuldana’ (flour-sugar balls) and ‘Laddoo’ taking centre stage in rural West Bengal’s Lok Sabha elections, the confectioners in the city are not leaving any opportunity to bank on the frenzied ambience. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: Mamata ‘Sandesh’ (the cottage cheese sweet) is readily coming up in any form you wish. They have been flying off the shelves since the election drums were rolled. “We have been making these sweets during elections for many years. This year also the response is very good,” Poppy Mullick of Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick told IANS. Asked which of the party-themed sweets was selling the most, she jokingly said “no comments” mentioning that all the items were being sold. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in state Regarding the bulk orders placed by workers, Mullick gave a hint that ‘the state’s ruling party’ Trinamool Congress tops the chart. They have priced a sweet of 250 grams at Rs 150. The Sodepur sweet shop that specialises in theme sweets during football and Cricket World Cup events, is offering decorative tray filled with huge sweets replicated as party symbols. Trinamool’s ‘jora ghash phul’ (twin-flower), BJP’s Lotus, Hand symbol of Congress, hammer and sickle of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have been given a sweet twist. They are carefully placed on the tray and the empty space is also filled with the Kheer Sandesh making it almost appear as a huge cake. “We are offering these big trays whose price range from Rs 800-2,000 and a small Sandesh is Rs 70,” Sanjib Das, store’s staff said. Das is elated as this year they are getting a “huge response”. He mentioned that customers are so impressed that they are asking for larger sizes. The ‘Trinamool’ Sandesh are in great demand followed by BJP’s. Sweets of other parties like Congress and CPI (M) are being sold but lesser than the others,” Das said. Orders can also be customised as per the customers’ demand. They also ensure that the customers get the freshest of quality, so after placing the order with alterations one shall have to wait for a little time. Almost fourteen to fifteen men are toiling hard to churn out these sweet delicacies laced with aesthetic appeal. “This is just the beginning, I am sure that as the election heat picks up, the demands will keep soaring. We will try our best to deliver,” Das said. While Mullicks will stick to sweets with party symbols, Shibani Sweets will try to come up with sweets replicating leader’s face if any customer demands. Amidst the high voltage campaigns, these sweets will add a dash of goodness and will be savoured by the supporters and the members of the winning party and candidates, the shop said. Already in the state, Trinamool Congress’ Birbhum district President Anubrata Mondal’s directive to party workers to hand over nakuldana and water to people to keep them cool in the oppressive summer months and the BJP’s decision to distribute laddoo among the people as a counter move has added to the sweetness of the electoral contest. The seven-phased election in the state will commence on April 11 and the last date of the poll is May 19. Votes will be counted on May 23.last_img read more
