27 August 2013 Former South African president Nelson Mandela was honoured on Monday with the inaugural Lifetime Award for Global Peace from the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation. Receiving the award on Mandela’s behalf during a ceremony at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre in Putrajaya, Malaysia, South African President Jacob Zuma said: “We are humbled as South Africans to share president Mandela with the world. “At the same time, we are truly proud that our country, and the struggle for liberation in particular, produced such an international icon.” Zuma, who arrived in Malaysia for an official visit on Sunday, said that the 95-year-old statesman was still “in a critical but stable condition” in hospital in Pretoria, where he was admitted on 8 June and has been receiving treatment since for a recurring lung infection. “While wishing him good health, we also have to celebrate his legacy, and learn from it, in order to build a better world.” Zuma added that Mandela was also “no stranger to Malaysia”, having led South Africa in cementing ties with Malaysia during his presidency, and being a personal friend of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. “In a rare gesture for a foreign head of government at the time, Dr Mahathir was among the first to meet Mr Nelson Mandela at the airport in Zambia in 1990, soon after his release from prison,” Zuma said. “In the meeting they later held at a Zambian government guest house, Dr Mahathir presented Madiba with a silver keris, the symbol of Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy system of government.” The award, Zuma said, would further highlight the need for peace in the world, “as it has been given to a man who has demonstrated a remarkable ability for forgiveness and reconciliation, which are the building blocks for a peaceful society”. It was this commitment to reconciliation, Zuma said, that stood at the core of the Mandela legacy. “It influenced both his efforts to build a new democracy at home and his contribution to the resolution of conflicts in the larger world. “When others doubted whether it was still possible for old enemies to beat their swords into ploughshares, he showed us how.” SAinfo reporter
Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification Facebook and the Federal Trade Commission have a final settlement concerning charges that Facebook deceived members when it said they could keep their information private on the social platform while allowing it to go public. The settlement requires Facebook to give consumers clear notice and get their consent before sharing private information beyond their privacy settings. Facebook also will be subject to biennial privacy audits by independent third parties. The FTC’s case with Facebook stems from a 2011 investigation into the social platform’s privacy practices. The FTC case stemmed from Facebook behavior dating back to 2009, around the time the company’s CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg proclaimed the “death of privacy.”An initial settlement was reached between the FTC and Facebook Nov. 29, 2011. Today’s announcement formalizes that agreement. The government has won similar agreements with Google and Twitter. The FTC lodged seven complaints against Facebook when it began its investigation. Many of Facebook’s privacy practices are well-chronicled, including when it changed to the way member information and privacy settings were displayed without getting prior approval from them. The FTC also claimed that Facebook shared personal data with advertisers all the while claiming that it did not. As well, it kept people’s photos and videos on the site after they had deleted their accounts. In response to the FTC settlement last November, Zuckerberg wrote a memo to Facebook members, “Our Commitment to the Facebook Community,” that admitted mistakes in how he shared their information.“Overall, I think we have a good history of providing transparency and control over who can see your information,” Zuckerberg wrote. “That said, I’m the first to admit that we’ve made a bunch of mistakes. In particular, I think that a small number of high profile mistakes […] and poor execution as we transitioned our privacy model two years ago, have often overshadowed much of the good work we’ve done.”For the past several years, the FTC has targeted online privacy. Earlier this week, the FTC fined Google $22.5 million for failing to honor privacy settings in Apple’s mobile Safari browser. It is the largest fine for privacy violations ever levied by the FTC.Per the settlement, Facebook will accept third-party privacy audits for the next 20 years. Facebook will be subject to civil penalties of up to $16,000 for each violation of the order. New Delhi, May 18 (PTI) After two consecutive months of slowdown, domestic air traffic witnessed a marginal growth with demand for travel going up by a little over 15 per cent in April over the year-ago period.Indian carriers together flew 91.34 lakh passengers in April, 2017 as compared to 79.32 lakh passengers in the corresponding month of the previous year, as per monthly traffic data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) today. After posting over 20 per cent growth in the domestic passenger market for 13 consecutive months till January this year, the demand for air travel dropped to 15.77 per cent in February and 14.91 per cent in March, respectively. This marginal increase is due to the onset of the tourist season. However, the demand between January-April period of this year rose 17.71 per cent compared to the same period last year with the total number of passengers at 309.35 lakhs.Low-cost carrier IndiGo flew the maximum number of passengers at 37.79 lakh garnering 41.4 per cent of the total market share. In terms of On-Time Performance (OTP), however, the market leader was pushed to the third sport with Tata-SIA joint venture Vistara claiming the top position at 87.4 per cent.Another budget carrier SpiceJet once again witnessed the highest seat occupancy across its flights, registering 93.4 per cent load factor last month.During the month, a total of 643 complaints were received from passengers, with the maximum against government-run Air India, followed by Jet Airways and its subsidiary JetLite.Reacting to the traffic data, COO of travel portal Yatra.com, Sharat Dhall, said, “We are confident that this trend of strong growth in the domestic aviation market will continue in the near to medium term”. Ohio State then-freshman goaltender Tommy Nappier covers up a puck during Ohio State’s 4-0 win against Wisconsin on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018. Credit: Nick Hudak | For The LanternGoaltending can make or break a season. Teams with elite athletes between the pipes often find themselves competing for a championship at the end of the year.Ohio State is no exception.Redshirt senior goaltender Sean Romeo was one of the crutches that the Buckeyes relied on during their Frozen Four run last season. He allowed just over two goals per game and had a save percentage of .927, No. 3 in the Big Ten and No 9 in the country, starting 37 of the 41 games Ohio State played. This season, however, has been a different story for Romeo. He’s only started in half of the Buckeyes’ matchups and in his first three games, he allowed 11 goals, saving 81.2 percent of shots sent his way.Though Romeo has improved as of late, pitching three straight shutouts against Colgate, Notre Dame and Wisconsin, a program record, his struggles early in the season paved the way for sophomore Tommy Nappier to step into the spotlight for Ohio State. In the seven games Nappier has appeared in, including six starts, he has only allowed eight goals and holds the best save percentage in the nation at .958, along with two shutouts. While most teams generally put one guy in net for most of their season, associate head coach Steve Miller is familiar with having two dependable players in goal.“I go back to some of our great Denver teams. We were fortunate at times to have two really good guys who push each other, who challenge each other every day in practice,” Miller said. “You know you got to come and got to be sharp every day. You know there’s another guy there doing the same thing who’s playing at a high level, so I think it’s a real big positive for the guys.”Beyond the obvious benefits of having two dependable goaltenders, such as having a backup in case the starter goes down, it means less wear and tear on each goalie as the season progresses.“I feel more rested,” Romeo said. “You know, it’s a lot easier to play one game than two games.”A duo of rested goalies can pay dividends down the stretch for Ohio State come tournament time when other teams don’t have the same depth in net. Splitting starts has already led to a record-setting stretch for Ohio State between the pipes. The lone goal given up by Nappier against Wisconsin broke a three-game shutout streak. Ohio State has only given up three goals and has four shutouts in its past six games. The Buckeyes are also the only team in the nation that has multiple goaltenders with at least two shutouts, leading the NCAA with five shutouts..After Romeo started in almost every game for Ohio State last season, it would be understandable for him to be disappointed after getting his playing time cut in half. But he has taken his reduced playing time in stride and is nothing but supportive of his goaltending counterpart. “I enjoy going to the rink every day, seeing [Nappier],” Romeo said. “Obviously, we’re competing against each other, but there’s nothing bad. When he’s in I’m cheering for him, I think when I’m in he’s cheering for me, I hope so.” Nappier shared Romeo’s sentiments, saying that Romeo helps to make him better every day.Moving forward, there has been no indication from the coaching staff that these plans will change. Barring one goaltender’s play declining as the season goes on, it is expected that they will continue to split starts. Decisions may change, however, as Ohio State nears the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments in the spring. In high-stakes situations, they will have to decide whether to stick with both their hot hands or go with the veteran leadership that Romeo would bring to a squad trying to return to the Frozen Four.

April 24, 2015On Tuesday 21st April PR co-ordinator Hildemar Cruz and visiting PhD researcher Karen Munro presented a booth at Glendale Community College’s Earth Day Vendor Fair, part of GCC’s week-long Earth Day events.Lured in by the eye-catching images of Arcosanti and Cosanti (and the bowl of mini chocolates), the booth attracted the attention of both students and staff from the College, with Hildemar and Karen on hand to discuss how arcology proposes an alternative to the environmental concerns associated with urban planning, such as sprawl, pollution and segregation of people and services.Hildemar provided information on visiting both Arcosanti and Cosanti, the workshop program and the Arcosanti events program. The location of the event was particularly relevant to Arcosanti and Cosanti as GCC has on campus an open air amphitheatre designed by Paolo Soleri in 1996, and a few of the people who approached the booth recognised the architectural style of the apse on campus in the images on display.[photos and text by Hildemar and Karen]Additionally, Karen provided information on the new collaborative Master’s in Architecture and Ecology which will launch in October 2015, delivered between the University of Strathclyde Glasgow and Arcosanti. The Master’s in Architecture and Ecology will provide students with the unique opportunity to complete one semester of study in Glasgow before travelling to Arcosanti to work on a semester-long practical project addressing research needs of Arcosanti in the areas of architecture and engineering.More information on the new course can be found at Strathclyde University.
