BIG forward Mose Masoe will join Saints next seaso

first_imgBIG forward Mose Masoe will join Saints next season. The 24-year-old put has put to paper on a two-year contract from 2014 and will link up current teammate Luke Walsh.A forward by trade, he joined Sydney Roosters’ junior system in 2008 before making his first grade debut in 2010 against the Gold Coast. From there he went to appear 46 times time for his club, adding two tries. The powerful Kiwi – who has been selected in the train on squads for both New Zealand and Samoa – then joined Penrith Panthers where he has played seven games to date.“Mose is a big forward who will add a lot of size to our pack next year,” Saints Head Coach Nathan Brown said. “He is young, still developing and will complement the squad we are putting together for 2014.“We’re delighted to have secured his services and once again we’d like to thank Penrith Panthers for agreeing to release him from his contract early.”Masoe is sure to be a fans’ favourite at Saints standing at six foot four and the best part of 18 stone. We’ve trawled the net for videos of Masoe and this one certainly sums him up.And we’ll have an interview with the new boy very soon.last_img read more

IT is with great regret that we learn of the passi

first_imgIT is with great regret that we learn of the passing of Alec Davies, a winger of the 1950s, who has quite a distinction writes Alex Service. Although he played just four competitive matches for the Saints’ First Team, he scored seven tries. Furthermore, he scored a hat-trick in his first and last match for the club. His debut was against Rochdale Hornets, at Knowsley Road, on January 3 1953 and he raced in for three touchdowns, with the great Duggie Greenall as his centre, as the Saints won 37-5. Alec’s final match also included three tries. This time Reg Senior was his centre, against Whitehaven, on April 16 1956 at Knowsley Road. The home team again triumphed 22-7, with a young scrum-half from Thatto Heath, Alex Murphy – making his debut.A lad from Parr, born in August 1935, Alec Davies attended Allanson Street School, where he played football and cricket. It was only when he moved to secondary education at Parr Central that he started to play rugby league. Although he was extremely quick, he was quite a burly youngster and was once told to take up running to shed a little weight. A team-mate of Todder Dickinson at Central, who played stand-off, Alec was a regular for the Town Team and was selected for Lancashire schoolboys on two occasions. He became a champion sprinter too, with his fastest schoolboy time 10.6 seconds for the 100 yards. At the age of 15, he joined the United Services junior rugby league team, which included the likes of Brian Howard, Walter Delves and Bill Boycott. He moved on to Pilkington Recs and ultimately signed for the Saints just a few days after another of his school mates, Frank Carlton, had signed professional forms for the club. Although the Saints fancied him as a forward in those early days, he did eventually play in his accustomed position on the flanks and kept up his athletics too, running for Earlestown Viaduct, with whom he won the Northern Counties relay championship.Alec remained a stalwart of the A team, but his progress was stifled by a troublesome shoulder injury, which put him out of the game for well over half a season. It is also worthy of note that there was a third Saints’ winger from Parr Central on Saints’ books at the time – Eric Ledger – and competition for places in the mid 1950s was tough. It was obvious that Alec Davies was a superb sportsman, with his marvellous turn of pace, but like Austin Rhodes [piano] he was also a gifted musician. He took violin lessons for almost ten years until he was 15 and actually was invited to join the orchestra at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool. Ultimately, he preferred to keep his job as an apprentice fitter and play rugby league. At this sad time, the St. Helens club sends its condolences to his family and friends.last_img read more

AD blames traffic congestion on car dependence and government inertia

first_imgPeople’s daily dependence on cars is causing traffic congestion around Malta, and government is doing its best to avoid addressing the problem said Ralph Cassar; the secretary general of Alternattiva Demokratika (AD), who is also a Counsellor in Attard. Cassar suggested various measures which can improve the situation, such as the Bus Rapid transit system, which connects the main localities using roads which are reserved only for public buses. Highly polluted areas should be declared low emission zones using congestion charges, said Cassar. He complained that Transport Malta is not cooperating. Carmel Cacopardo, Chairperson of AD, stated that Government’s current politics regarding transport and mobility are causing more traffic and higher levels of pollution. He emphasized the need to increase security in residential roads, and that Local Councils should work on creating public spaces for people instead of making more space for cars.WhatsApp SharePrintlast_img read more

BENS BLOG Keeping the Masses at heel in Tel Aviv

first_imgOn arrival at the beach today, I headed straight to the bar, to buy a cup of coffee. The barman was impolite to the point of surly, his right (he deemed), because Punters were queuing 5-deep, to buy his watered down beer, at over a fiver a pint.I then made my way, to an electronic machine, and paid the tariff for 3 sunbeds & 1 umbrella. However, on the beach itself, it was unclear where was available, but clear too, that the seating was piled up, some distance away (I am too fat and pampered to carry out such straightforward tasks). Anyway, Sunbed-Man then appeared and went off to fetch the beds before laying them out. At this point, I tried to give him a 20 Sheckels (£4) tip. But he wouldn’t take it. Again, I tried. He whispered to me, that he wasn’t allowed, when working in the burning heat, trudging up and down the sand, to accept tips, under threat of losing his job.Buy a flat, within sight of the beach he works on, for £5million. Pay a fiver for a pint of beer, from an arrogant barman. Go to some extremely expensive restaurants to spend your money. But don’t give Sunbed-Man a tip. No, no, Blog. WE WOULDN’T WANT HIM GETTING AHEAD OF HIMSELF NOW, WOULD WE?Over and out, B xlast_img read more

Bilingual immigrants are healthier according to new Rice study

first_imgAddThis ShareDavid Ruth713-348-6327david@rice.eduAmy Hodges713-348-6777amy.hodges@rice.eduHOUSTON – (March 15, 2012) – Bilingual immigrants are healthier than immigrants who speak only one language, according to new research from sociologists at Rice University. The study, which appears in the March issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, found that people with strong English and native language proficiencies report better physical and mental health than unilingual immigrants.“Our research suggests that English proficiency gained at the expense of native-language fluency may not be beneficial for overall health status,” said Rice alumna and Stanford University graduate student Ariela Schachter, who co-authored the research paper with Rice sociology professors Bridget Gorman and Rachel Tolbert Kimbro. “It’s very important for the immigrants to hold on to their native language in addition to learning English.”The study examined associations between English and native-language proficiency and usage and self-rated health for more than 4,649 U.S. immigrants from China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico. The research showed that the favorable health reported by bilingual immigrants is not impacted by factors such as socioeconomic status, acculturation, family and social support, stress and discrimination and health behaviors. The researchers theorize that the health benefits may be the result of a kind of “cultural flexibility” that allows them to easily integrate with their surroundings while maintaining cultural ties.“Individuals who maintain native-language fluency while also learning English may be better equipped to retain relationships in their countries of origin and form new ones in the U.S.,” Gorman said. “We believe this can help explain the positive relationship between bilingualism and self-rated health.”“There are still big questions about why bilingual immigrants are healthier than their unilingual counterparts,” Kimbro said. “We hope our findings will encourage further research of the subject.”The research was funded by Rice University.-30-Study: Language Proficiency and Health Status: Are Bilingual Immigrants Healthier?: http://hsb.sagepub.com/content/53/1/124.full.pdfRice University Department of Sociology: http://sociology.rice.eduBridget Gorman bio: http://sociology.rice.edu/GormanRachel Kimbro bio: http://sociology.rice.edu/rkimbroAriela Schachter bio: http://bakerinstitute.org/personnel/students/arielaschachterLocated on a 300-acre forested campus in Houston, Rice University is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 20 universities by U.S. News & World Report. 9 Texas Officers Fired for Writing False Traffic Tickets

first_img Nine police officers in a Dallas suburb have been fired for reporting traffic stops they never conducted. Arlington police said in a statement Friday that three other officers resigned before the investigation was finished. Four other officers remain under investigation. The fired officers have the right to appeal the department’s decision. The officers had been suspended in May after a review of officer activity in the field identified several individuals who claimed to have made traffic stops that actually never occurred. The department says its investigation confirmed that no fictitious citations were issued. Officials did not indicate why the traffic reports were falsified. The police department says its findings have been sent to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. Share 9 Texas Officers Fired for Writing False Traffic Tickets By The Associated Press December 10, 2016 Updated: December 10, 2016 Share this article US center_img Show Discussion (Scott Olson/Getty Images) LINKEDINPINTERESTREDDITTUMBLRSTUMBLEUPON last_img read more

New Search for Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370

first_img New Search for Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 By Reuters January 3, 2018 Updated: January 3, 2018 U.S.-based seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity on Wednesday said it was moving a vessel closer to a possible search area for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 as it soon expects to be awarded a contract by Malaysia to resume the search. The disappearance of the aircraft en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 with 239 people aboard ranks among the world’s greatest aviation mysteries. Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless A$200-million ($156.62 million) search in January last year. But in October, Malaysia said it was in talks with Ocean Infinity to resume the search on a “no-cure, no-fee” basis, meaning it will only get paid if it finds the plane.“Ocean Infinity is hopeful of receiving the final contract award for the resumption of the search for MH370 over the coming days,” a company spokesman told Reuters in an emailed statement.Police carry a piece of debris found in the coastal area of Saint-Andre de la Reunion, in the east of the French Indian Ocean island of La Reunion, which has been identified as part of missing Malaysian Air MH370 on July 29, 2015. This is designed to save time should the contract award be forthcoming, as hoped,” he said.Reuters shipping data showed the Seabed Constructor left Durban, South Africa, on Tuesday and was headed to Perth, Australia, where it is due on Feb. 7.Malaysia’s deputy transport minister, Aziz Kaprawi, said the government was negotiating final terms of the agreement with Ocean Infinity and he was not aware of the vessel’s movement.“We are in the final stages of the decision. On our part, we have yet to finalize the agreement,” he told Reuters. When asked whether Australia and China would be consulted about the contract award, Aziz said: “Basically, Malaysia will make the decision, as this offer was made to the Malaysian government. The cost will also be decided by Malaysia.”Investigators believe someone may have deliberately switched off the transponder of the Boeing 777 before diverting it over the Indian Ocean. Various pieces of debris have been collected from Indian Ocean islands and Africa’s east coast and at least three of them have been confirmed as coming from the missing plane.($1 = 1.2770 Australian dollars)Recommended Video: Boiling water turns to snow LINKEDINPINTERESTREDDITTUMBLRSTUMBLEUPON US News Share this articlecenter_img Share A Malaysia Airlines plane prepares for landing at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, outside Kuala Lumpur on July 21, 2014. I want to be able to peacefully sit in my apartment without a swarm of bees flying in, or the risk of it, because now they’re even coming through my front door,” added Coleman to Fox7.Ivana said that she reported the issue to her landlord, but neighbors said that the problem persisted for months. “I don’t know how effective that’s been … like I said, it’s getting worse,” said David Overholt, who lives in the complex.Coleman said that she’s now afraid to walk through her front door.“It’s finally gotten to the point where they’ve been getting more and more aggressive. I actually injured myself this morning crawling out my window since the bees were completely blocking my exit way,” Coleman said.“I’ve gotten stung three times actually,” Overholt told the Fox affiliate. “It’s getting worse and worse. If anybody’s allergic in the neighborhood, kids walking by, it could be bad. And us, we have to navigate this swarm of bees every day it seems like,” he added. And Schumacher said that of the bee infestation, “the danger to her was quite real.”“If I do it wrong, people’s pets could die … people could die,” Schumacher noted.Eventually, Schumacher was able to move out the bees, Fox7 reported. The bees were relocated to a ranch in Travis County, Texas. (Fox7 screenshot)last_img read more
